Why do good preschool teachers quit?

There are two reasons why preschool teachers quit; lack of support and an unprofessional management team.  Some of the teachers I worked with in Early Childhood felt unsupported.

1. Lack of support- when a teacher doesn't feel supported in her classroom or as an employee, they will become frustrated and won’t want to work for that particular company anymore. Some even decide that they don’t want to be in Early Childhood anymore and change their career altogether.  I have had a lot of challenging students during my career in early childhood. And the thing that frustrated me the most, was the lack of support I received from management.

2. Unprofessional management team- A good management team is the key component of a good center. If the management team doesn't work well together or with the teachers, most likely the center will not run well either. When the management team is unprofessional it is hard to feel comfortable enough to approach them with problems that may arise with parents or other staff members. Because of this, everyday problems may not be resolved, and unresolved problems will always cause other problems.

I originally put that low pay was a factor in why teachers quit. But I don’t think that it is; I believe that if teachers love what they are doing and feel supported, pay will not contribute to their unhappiness. Most teachers understand that preschool teachers are not paid as well as other teachers.

Each center will always have challenges that they must deal with, but without the support of management and other team members, these challenges can overtake the center and cause small challenges to grow into big ones. That is why it is important to stay on top of parent and teacher concerns before they get out of hand.
